How this calculator works
Use this calculator to check if a specific product meets the Food and Beverage Classification System (FBCS) Nutrient Criteria. It is designed for food or drink items that have a nutrition panel. Answer a few questions about the product and the calculator will tell you if it’s an everyday, sometimes or occasional product.
What the results mean
The FBCS Nutrient Criteria have been developed with schools and early learning services in mind (Parents are welcome to try it too, for products they buy for the family!). You’ll be able to check the kinds of foods that might be served to children, for example, at a canteen/tuckshop or daycare.
You won’t see certain categories of food available for calculating and some food categories are automatically occasional due to these foods being too high in energy and/or saturated fat and/or added sugar and/or sodium and provide minimal nutritional value. For school children these foods include confectionery and deep fried foods.
Because schools and early learning services are encouraged by the Ministries of Health and Education to be water and plain milk only, there are no beverage items on the calculator.
