Congratulations to Rotorua Intermediate!
09 December 2015Knowing how to cook nutritious, delicious food is an important skill, and one that students at Rotorua Intermediate will be busy learning about this year. Thanks to Adolescent Health Teacher Rachel Hitchens, the school has just received a major boost to its cooking lessons by winning a Buffalo Bistro Contact Grill.
She won the industrial grill, valued at $550, by signing the school up to Fuelled4life, a free healthy eating programme run by the Heart Foundation. Ms Hitchens and her students (pictured) accepted the grill from the Heart Foundation’s local Health Promotion Coordinator, Jasmin Jackson, at a school assembly this month.
During the assembly, Jasmin talked to students about what the Heart Foundation does to fight heart disease in New Zealand. She praised the school for the heart healthy steps it has already taken and said the new grill will support its good work.
“Rotorua Intermediate already includes nutrition education in its curriculum, so being able to put that learning into practice and find out how to prepare the healthy foods in an appetising way is very important,” Jasmin says.
She thanked Choice Catering Equipment Ltd for generously donating the grill as a prize in the Heart Foundation’s competition, which was designed to encourage schools and early childhood education (ECE) services to sign up to Fuelled4life.
Ms Hitchens said Rotorua Intermediate will be using the grill in its student centre and for healthy cooking in culinary arts classes. School house groups will also be able to use it to prepare healthy food at cultural events.
